What is a fundamentalist? One meaning the dictionary gives is "one
who is immovable from his beliefs." To be a
fundamentalist means you are committed to the fundamentals. Today, the meaning of the term
"fundamentalist" has undergone a change in meaning. It is typically
used as a term of derision by those who hold in contempt those who believe in the concept of
absolute truth. It is loosely interpreted to describe anyone who expresses any kind of
belief in the teachings of the Bible. There is a concerted effort by the world media to smear all fundamentalists with
the image of being unloving, intolerant, and unkind.
The reality is that fundamentalism
reflects the truth expressed in Romans 3:4 "God
forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written,..."
What does that mean? We believe that when the newspapers finish with their headlines and the
"learned" men from the great institutions have spoken their last
words, that God's words as revealed in the Bible will be just as true as when
they were first spoken by chosen men of God under divine inspiration. Yet man will
be guilty to the very end of twisting and distorting Gods
truths to serve his own evil desires.
After having watched the headlines over the last 25 years,
I'm convinced that Bible believing parents need not fear mans
"discoveries" in the physical or social sciences will undermine the truth God
has revealed to us in his word. No matter what the current "experts" say about
raising children, God's Word clearly suggests that parents should use the rod
and correction to
discipline their children. It works, and properly applied, produces healthy and well
adjusted children. A fundamentalist is one who believes without apology that the solutions God provides in
his Word are suitable for the problems we face.
In sharp contrast, the wisdom of this world has no
anchor, no basis in reality. How should we respond to moral relativism? No
matter how many times or how loudly social scientists proclaim that extra-marital or
perverted sex is normal, the fundamental truths remain because God's moral laws
haven't changed. Gods design is for men and
women to share their sexual relationship in the security and sanctity of marriage. There
is a very simple test we can apply to the new teachings which have supplanted Biblical
truth in modern society. What is their fruit? A quick look at a newspaper will quickly
prove that in our western societies, the fruit of mans recent departure from scriptural truth
as a moral anchor has left a bitter taste, with
the promise of worse things to come when the lies now being sown grow to full harvest.
We will
not be ashamed to be counted among those who believe in the inerrant reliability of
Gods Word and neither should you. Hence, it is not a bad thing to be
a fundamentalist, if your perspective includes unchanging beliefs in eternal
values. Count on us to remain fundamentalists until His return!
